The Future of Lanyards

The future looks bright for printed lanyards. These handy, popular items have yet to reach their full potential, and new uses are already beginning to emerge. Lanyards will soon have more uses and be worn by more people than ever before.

Data storage devices capable of containing large amounts of information have now gotten small enough to be carried on custom lanyards. One example is the Mifare chip which can hold the full record of a business account, charge account or customer service record. These are already being placed on plastic cards, and could easily be put into a small plastic case to go on lanyards.

Another example of technology that lends itself to use with lanyards is computerized medical records. People with conditions that might require quick attention can have their pertinent records on a lanyard around their neck. In the event of an emergency, medical personnel can have the records in hand instantly without having to waste time fumbling through the patient’s pocket or wallet.

An application already being tried is incorporating electrical wiring into lanyards. Some personalised lanyards have a holder for an audio device, and the wires leading to the headphones run through the lanyard.

These applications and others will become increasingly prevalent as more small communication and data storage devices come on the market.
